As a club member you not only support Gessnerallee you also have the opportunity to make active contributions. The board of trustees of Theaterhaus, the association Theaterhaus Gessnerallee, arose through the merging of Verein Theaterrat Gessnerallee and the Audience Association VTG. The board acts as the strategic governing body. In its function as the Audience Association, the VTG aims to encourage and support the artistic exchange between the artists and the audience. At the moment there are around 100 members.
The VTG was founded in 1986 by a group of independent cultural workers, artists and former staff at the Zurich Theaterspektakel Festival. Their aim was to establish a stage for the professional independent theatre scene. In 1989, their efforts culminated in the provisional opening of the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee. In a popular vote in 1993, the people of Zurich agreed to both the definite opening and the partial renovation of the building. In 1995/1996, as a result of the VTG’s commitment and efforts, the structural restoration of the Reithalle building and the southern side wing took place and the premises were customized to meet the artistic, technical and administrative requirements. In order to successfully lead the Theaterhaus, the Verein Theaterrat Gessnerallee was founded with all its members belonging to the executive committee of the Theaterrat. With the aim to ensuring a broader base for the trusteeship and to revalue membership within the Audience Association, both associations joined forces on August 1, 2012.
