Too high, can't come down
It's in the air and it's all around
Can you feel me now?
The song Toxic by Britney Spears and its corresponding stage choreography are performed 16 times delayed in the performance Slowburn. In this extreme extension, the choreography refuses the immediate satisfaction of the original 143 beats per minute. Everything is in a state of constant becoming: pop becomes deep time.
Slowburn is the second aesthetic investigation in Benjamin Burger's multi-year project States of Exhaustion. Starting from chronic exhaustion and fatigue as a syndrome of a hypercapitalist performance society, he searches for dramaturgies and narratives of resistance. With the performers Marie Popall, Benjamin Spinnler and the sound designer Ernesto Coba Antequera he opposes fatigue not with activity but with the delay of action and resists action. Slowburn is a mesmerizing manifesto against the perpetual acceleration of our present.
