Ballroom culture emerged in NYC in the middle of the last century as a safe space by and for predominantly Latin and African-American queers. Particularly affected by discrimination due to intersectionality, they came together in families of choice, so-called houses. And that fuelled creativity! Neither RuPaul's Drag Race nor shows like "Lip Sync Battle" would be conceivable without them - and voguing certainly wouldn't be. The dance style from the ballrooms conquered the charts with Madonna's "Vogue" from 1990 and is still danced all over the world today.
