A habitat of dissent is a proposal for a durational performance intervention in public/semi-public and institutional spaces, in which we create a series of artistic interventions exploring the idea of ‘Safety Net’ in resistance and building a culture of care.
It is our attempt in recognising our position and creating agency in the ongoing revolution happening in India. As artists who have recently moved for residencies and are the new residents in Europe, are now identifying our roles as artists in resistance rather than residence. Understanding that the spaces we occupy here in Zurich, currently provide us with the safety and visibility that the millions in protests lack, in India. It has thus become imperative to collectively work as acting mediums to amplify the visibility of the protests in India. ‘Safety net’ here can be understood as an overarching framework which provides a space to fall back, retrieve, and fuel the ongoing revolution from this distance and document the labour of resistance.
_A Habitat of dissen_t is collectively created by Sarah Naqvi and Pankaj Tiwari.
Actions: Sustaining a protest / sharing a protest
Simultaneous acts of care being practiced, a tent is being sewn, a clay oven is built to cook the meal, a poetry of resistance sung, and a distance being covered in repetition. One fueled by another, rhythmically taking the form of the words being spoken, the food being shared, the stitches being marked and the feet bruising. Exhaustion seeps in, the aftermath of resistance, a gateway for the oppressor. But one holds the other, tying them in a cycle of care, warmth, shelter and food.
The public moments in this project happen spontaneously and are shared via a Telegram group.
